On April 26, 1986, a fire broke out in the 4th power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant located near the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. This event, called the tragedy of the 20th century, was the largest man-made disaster. As a result of the explosion in the fourth power unit of the NPP, a large amount of radioactive material was released into the environment. The power of the explosion was 500 times greater than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In the first days of the disaster, 50 people died from the explosion, fire and acute radiation. As a result of the incident, about 7 thousand people lost their lives, 25 thousand people were permanently disabled as a result of strong radiation, and tens of thousands of people were left orphaned. In the early stages of the tragedy - in 1986-1987, about 600 thousand people from all over the USSR were mobilized to eliminate the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl.
More than 7 thousand Azerbaijani citizens were also involved in eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. Since the tragedy, about 2,500 people have died from health problems. The survivors are suffering from radiation exposure they received during rescue operations.
EDnews reports that on April 23, members of the "Azerbaijan Chernobyl Disabled Persons' Union" Public Union deeply respected the memory of the National Leader of our people, the architect and founder of the modern independent Azerbaijani state, Heydar Aliyev, in the Alley of Honor, on the occasion of the next anniversary of that event, laid a wreath and laid flowers at his grave.
The memory of the Great Leader's lifelong companion, prominent ophthalmologist-scientist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva was also honored, and flowers were laid on her grave.The memories of well-known statesmen Aziz Aliyev and Professor Tamerlan Aliyev were also honored, and flowers were laid on their graves.
Members of the Public Union visited the Alley of Martyrs, respectfully commemorated the heroic sons of the Motherland who lost their lives in the struggle for the freedom and sovereignty of our country, and laid flowers on their graves. Then, a wreath was laid in front of the "Eternal Flame" monument.
