Monaco has been rocked by its first-ever recorded bomb assassination attempt after an explosion outside a luxury apartment building seriously injured a Ukrainian businessman and two other people, shattering the principality’s long-standing reputation as one of the world’s safest places. EDnews report, citing CNN

The blast occurred shortly before 9 p.m. local time on Monday at the entrance of the upscale Sun Palace residential building, just as Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Yermolaiev, 58, exited the property. Authorities said Yermolaiev suffered serious injuries, while a woman and a 13-year-old child were also critically hurt.

Prince Albert II condemned the attack as “an odious act” and ordered an intensified security response, directing police and security services to identify those responsible and increase patrols across the city-state.

Monaco's Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into attempted premeditated murder and the use of an explosive device in a public place.

Christophe Mirmand, Monaco’s Minister of State, described the bombing as unprecedented in the country's history, saying surveillance footage showed the suspect repeatedly walking around the area before the explosion.

Investigators believe the suspect fled on foot into neighbouring France after the attack. A joint manhunt involving Monegasque and French law enforcement agencies is currently underway, but no arrests have been announced.

Known for its exceptionally low crime rate, Monaco reported no homicides or attempted murders last year. The principality, which covers just over two square kilometres, maintains one of the world's highest police-to-population ratios, supported by an extensive network of surveillance cameras and facial recognition technology.

Home to thousands of millionaires and high-profile international residents, Monaco has built its reputation on security, political stability and favourable tax policies. The bombing has raised fresh concerns over public safety in the wealthy Mediterranean enclave.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack as forensic teams examine the blast site and review surveillance footage.
