It is impermissible for Armenians to think about revenge over Azerbaijan today, said Robert Kocharyan.
The ex-president of Armenia Robert Kocharyan touched upon the defeat of Armenia in the Second Karabakh Was in his exclusive interview with Russian First Channel.
Eurasia Diary reports citing Azeri Daily, while analysing the reasons for the Second Karabakh War, Kocharyan stated that the war occurred because of the policy of the current political leadership of Armenia, which led the negotiation process with Azerbaijan to a dead end.
'The Armenian side began to put forward incomprehensible demands. It offered to start negotiations from the "zero point." Then there was a demand for the participation of Nagorno-Karabakh in the negotiations. Then they said that "Karabakh is Armenia, period." Following this, the process was heaped up with some new postulates, which made everyone feel that the Armenian side was withdrawing from the negotiations. It was a preventive method of avoiding the responsibility of difficult negotiations. It was an escape from a responsible approach to difficult negotiations… Along with this, over the past three years, the combat capability of the Armenian army has been methodically destroyed. And this was largely due to the pathological fear of the Armenian army experienced by the current government. The army was treated with distrust and fear. The so-called "corruption cleansing" began in the leadership of the army. There was an active replacement of the combat command staff. For 2.5 years, two chiefs of the General Staff were changed... During the war, Armenia did not have a single successful operation, failure after failure, not a single battle won,' said Robert Kocharyan.
When asked what was Kocharyan's attitude towards the terms of the peace agreement signed on November 10, he replied: 'Pashinyan had no other choice. The war lasted 44 days. All these days the Armenians have been fooling around, saying that we were winning. The shock was precisely from this. The authorities said that we were almost moving forward. I knew what was happening, and the initiated people knew...
But there was such a fooling of the population that the signed statement came as a shock to many in Armenia. After all, we kind of attacked... It turned out that Armenia had not had a single successful operation during the war. Failure after failure.'
Kocharyan sees the reason for such a bitter defeat in the fact that 'the army has been methodically destroyed in Armenia over the past three years.'
Posner asked Kocharyan: 'If you get power in Armenia, do you have an idea of revenge in Karabakh lurking?'
'The state of Armenia today and the state of the Armenian army simply does not allow any sober-minded one to think about such a revenge,' the ex-president replied, but said that he considers the peace today too unfair.
'There was a well-known proposal of the president of Russia on October 19, which was rejected by the Armenian side. That is, there was an opportunity to stop the war with a completely different alignment, but the prime minister of Armenia did not take responsibility for making such a decision. But there was a written report from the General Staff of Armenia that we were losing the war... As a result, we lost dozens of times more than we could have lost on October 19. Plus a few thousand more killed and wounded.'
