Shusha, Azerbaijan – During the second panel discussion of the Shusha Global Media Forum, Dr. Mostefa Souag, the Director-General of Al Jazeera, delivered a comprehensive address on the challenges posed by disinformation in today’s media landscape, Ednews reports.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Souag clarified Al Jazeera’s independence, stating, “Al Jazeera is an independent media network, funded by the Qatari state but not influenced by it.” He emphasized that the Qatari government does not interfere in the network’s operations, a practice established by the former Amir of Qatar. “If you find someone to finance a media network without imposing restrictions, grab it,” he remarked.

Dr. Souag responded to criticisms regarding Al Jazeera's objectivity, challenging detractors to present evidence of bias. He stressed the importance of factual reporting, stating, “We have a responsibility to report the news accurately, and we invite anyone who believes we’ve made an error to bring it to our attention.” He reiterated Al Jazeera’s commitment to presenting a variety of perspectives, noting, “We are the television of opinion and the other opinion.”

Highlighting the complexity of disinformation, Dr. Souag discussed recent examples, including false narratives surrounding events in Palestine. He criticized the international media for propagating misleading information, particularly regarding statements from Israeli officials, which contribute to the ongoing conflict. “The narrative that there are no Palestinians is one of the biggest lies perpetuated in the last century,” he asserted.

Dr. Souag argued that historical misconceptions have significant consequences, particularly for the Palestinian people, stating, “Disinformation not only misrepresents the truth but also shapes a distorted historical narrative that undermines humanity's core values.” He emphasized the need for honest discourse and accountability in media practices, urging journalists to uphold the truth amidst a landscape rife with misinformation.

The discussion concluded with Dr. Souag's call for a collective effort to combat disinformation, reinforcing the critical role media plays in fostering informed societies.
