Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the issue of reaching an agreement on a united BRICS currency is a "challenging task" but insisted the bloc will work towards reaching a resolution on the matter.
In his speech at the BRICS summit a day earlier, the Russian president stated that Moscow is committed to expanding the use of local currencies instead of the dollar. "The objective, irreversible process of de-dollarization of our economic ties is gaining momentum," he noted.
Putin also congratulated Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates on being accepted as new members of the BRICS, which they will officially become on January 1, 2024.
