Labour Party leader Kier Starmer told reporters on Tuesday that in case the Rwanda scheme fails to secure enough support to be adopted, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak should consider calling for general elections.
However, Starmer underscored that there is no doubt that the legislation will pass. "There'll be a lot of shouting and screaming, but in the end, it'll go through. The prime minister's got an 80-seat majority," Sky News quoted Starmer as saying.
The government is set to hold a second reading vote on the proposed bill later today as Sunak seeks to pass the legislation that would designate Rwanda as a safe country for asylum seekers, a move that aims to address the challenge of illegal immigration in Britain.
