Iraqi security forces carried out a large-scale operation in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone on Sunday, targeting several political figures as part of an investigation into alleged financial corruption.
According to AFP, the operation was conducted under judicial warrants and involved counter-terrorism units alongside military personnel.
Videos circulating on local Telegram channels showed tanks and heavily armed security forces deployed throughout the Green Zone. Additional footage appeared to show troops entering residential compounds during the operation.
The Green Zone is home to the US Embassy, diplomatic missions, international organizations, and the residences and offices of Iraq's senior government officials and political leaders.
Iraqi authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the operation. The identities of the politicians reportedly detained have also not been disclosed.
The operation comes amid the government's ongoing anti-corruption campaign. Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has repeatedly pledged to combat entrenched corruption since taking office, describing it as one of the country's most pressing challenges.
