The Israel Defense Forces have carried out an artillery attack on southern Beirut. According to the organization’s officials, the attack resulted in the death of the current chairman of Hezbollah, Hashem Safiuddin.
It is worth recalling that H. Nasrallah died on September 27 as a result of an Israeli bombing of the movement’s central headquarters in Beirut. The names of the movement leaders who died with him were also revealed: Ali Karaki – commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, Ibrahim Hussein Jazini – head of Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah’s personal security service, Samir Taufik Diab – Hassan Nasrallah’s advisor, Abd al-Amir Muhammad Siblini – responsible for the formation of Hezbollah’s forces, and Ali Nawaf Ayub – responsible for Hezbollah’s firepower. Ibrahim Hussein Jazini and Samir Taufik Diab were among the closest figures to Hassan Nasrallah.
Hashem Safiuddin was elected as the new secretary-general of Hezbollah on September 30. He is a close relative of Hassan Nasrallah. Hashem had previously headed Hezbollah’s Executive Council and was considered the second most important figure in the movement.
Officials from Lebanon’s Civil Defense Service discovered the body of Hashem Safiuddin, former head of Hezbollah’s Executive Council, while clearing debris in the Al-Mreij district on the outskirts of Beirut. This was reported by the "Al Hadath" television channel.
According to the information, after Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah’s neutralization in southern Beirut on September 27, Safiuddin was considered the main candidate for the post of secretary-general of Hezbollah.
Safiuddin was killed on October 3 during a strike on a bunker in the Al-Mreij district. Rescuers, while clearing the debris, recovered the bodies of 23 Hezbollah members who had participated in the meeting led by Safiuddin.
It is worth recalling that on October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked territories under Israeli control. As a result, more than 200 people, including the elderly, women, and children, were taken hostage. In response, the Israeli army launched military operations in Gaza. Reports had previously been circulated that ceasefire negotiations in Gaza had repeatedly stalled. At the same time, it was reported that the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt were working on a new ceasefire proposal for Israel and Hamas in Gaza. However, so far, these efforts have not led to any significant change.
