Russia is not going to meddle in the situation around the Belarusian presidential election since this is the republic’s internal affair, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday, EDNews.net reports citing TASS.
Speaking on the Kremlin’s stance on the situation around the Belarusian presidential election, the Russian presidential spokesman stressed: "This is Belarusian domestic affair, our approach here remains unchanged."
The Belarusian presidential election is not related to the Union State of Russia and Belarus, Peskov said. "We are really closer to each other than other countries due to our Union State, but this election concerns Belarusian sovereignty and we won’t meddle there," Peskov stated.
Earlier the Belarusian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case into July 14 events in Minsk over public order violations. According to the republic’s Interior Ministry, law enforcement agencies on Tuesday detained more than 250 people in various Belarusian regions. Human rights activists say more than 200 people were detained in Minsk at a rally in support of Viktor Babariko and Valery Tsepkalo, who were denied registration as presidential candidates.
Presidential election in Belarus is scheduled for August 9. The country’s Central Election Commission registered five presidential candidates, including incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko.
