Following Russia's announcement of a unilateral ceasefire, the attacks and aggression against the Ukrainian army in the front increased. At the same time, the name of Belarus is in the forefront. Thus, Belarus, which shares efforts with Russia in invading territories of Ukraine, has also attracted the attention of the West.
Yesterday, in the official statement issued by the head of the US State Department, Anthony Blinken, the warning to the official circles about the imposition of visa restrictions on 25 Belarusian members of the parliament (National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus) and the violation of democracy in the country is quite attention-grabbing.
"Everything depends on Lukashenka's decision...if he tries to maneuver, Ukraine and the West will apply a special "method of surgical treatment" on Belarus."
Ukrainian political analyst Vadim Tryukhan has said these words in his comments to Ednews. According to him, the active support of Belarus to the Russian front may lead to the payment of huge costs for it: "The lightest punishment for Belarus may be the sanctions imposed by Russia. If official Minsk does not undertstand from this, the punishment will be more severe."
Clarifying his thoughts, the expert commented on what fate awaits Belarus if it attacks Ukraine from its borders.
"First, the Belarusian army will be defeated and Belarus will lose all its half remaining sovereignty. As a result, Russia will immediately try to completely annex it.
Second, Belarus will face tougher sanctions than Russia because it does not have nuclear weapons, so there is nothing to threaten the West. Ukraine will cut diplomatic relations with this country and stop any economic activity. I can say with certainty that most Western countries will take the same step against it.
Thirdly, there will be an explosion of anger among Belarusian society, which does not support the Belarusian government, and which has gone astray in the war against Ukraine on the Russian side. If in 2020 the Lukashenka regime was able to overcome the protests, this time the result will be different. "Lukashenka's regime will fall and Belarus will enter a new era of democratic development."
Besides that, V. Tryukhan clarified the future of the citizenship status of Belarusians in Ukraine. It should be noted that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently signed a law on the deprivation of citizenship of Russians living in Ukraine. Regarding the fate of the Belarusian people living in Ukraine: "This is a different matter for us. It is not useful for Ukraine to give up Belarusians at the moment. Also, in the entire history of the existence of the Belarusian and Ukrainian peoples, there have never been any conflicts between us. We have been friends for centuries. The fate of our peoples is very similar. We even had nations that lost the largest percentage of their population during World War II. Moreover, Belarusians helped Ukraine a lot during our struggle for independence in the war against Russia," the expert added.
