As we reported, the US Department of State has commented on the provocative flight of an Iranian fighter jet along the Azerbaijani-Iranian state border.
The issue was raised during the briefing of US State Department Spokesman Ned Price.
He said Iran has long been a malign actor in the region.
"It’s engaged in malign activities, activities that threaten its neighbors both near and far. So we watch these types of tensions with concern," Price said.
According to him, the approach of the State Department is to invest in engagement with Azerbaijan and with Armenia to create a more stable South Caucasus region.
Matthew Bryza, the former US Ambassador in Azerbaijan, said the following while commenting on the statement of the US State Department:
“There is not a whole lot to add to state department press spokesman Ned Price's comments the United States views Iran as behaving in provocative and dangerous ways in many parts of the world. Whether it be in Syria, where it has supported the Assad regime or in Ukraine, where it is providing Russia with drones and possibly in the future with ballistic missiles to destroy individual civilians infrastructure, meaning energy and housing and to murder civilians.”
According to former Ambassador, Iran has long sponsored terrorist groups around the world, so it's now a significant statement by Ned Price:
“I think that the state department is going to add engagement with both Azerbaijan and Armenia as a way to ensure the stability of the South Caucasus in light of such provocative steps as Iran's military flight so close to its border with Azerbaijan, or through the troop movements and military movements of Iran last year toward Iran's border with Azerbaijan. It seems like the State Department and the Biden administration have added deterring Iran's aggressive and as net price but provocative and malign activities in the South Caucasus as well.”
