In a press conference led by Katya Andrusz today, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) international observer team shared positive insights about the 2024 snap presidential elections in Azerbaijan.
Ednews reports that, during the conference, Artur Gerasimov, the special coordinator of OSCE short-term observers, highlighted the historic significance of the elections, praising the broad participation of citizens across the country. He acknowledged the warm hospitality extended by international observers and praised the professional conduct of the administration at the precincts.
Daniella De Ridder, the head of the OSCE observer delegation, emphasized the high voter turnout and the transparency of the voting process. She noted the absence of significant competition among candidates, revealing a lack of alternatives and highlighting the underrepresentation of women among the presidential candidates.
Oygan Murphy, chairman of the OSCE Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Bureau, expressed gratitude to station workers and the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs. While acknowledging the professionalism of station staff and the overall activity of observers, he raised concerns about the arrest of journalists and opposition members before the election. Murphy also pointed out technical errors during voting and counting, occasional obstruction of local observers, and non-transparency in certain polling stations.
Responding to questions about potential pressure faced by the OSCE observers, Murphy assured that they were welcomed in all places without any interference. He emphasized their independence and stated that they were not pressured, operating with their own methods and experienced representatives.
Overall, the OSCE observers commended Azerbaijan for the democratic process while addressing challenges and areas for improvement in the conduct of the elections.
