Today marks the solemn occasion of the memorial day of Ayaz Mutallibov, a prominent political figure in Azerbaijan and the inaugural President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ednews reports.
Born on May 12, 1938, into an esteemed family in Baku, Ayaz Mutallibov hailed from the Saritorpag neighborhood of Shamakhi. His educational journey culminated in graduating from the Azerbaijan Petrochemical Institute in 1962 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Commencing his professional career in 1958 as a senior engineer-constructor, Ayaz Mutallibov later assumed various roles at the Baku household electrical appliances factory, showcasing his expertise and leadership in engineering and management.
In January 1990, he ascended to the position of the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. Subsequently, following the parliament's decision in May, he assumed the presidency, receiving a popular mandate in the 1991 national election.
During the early years of Azerbaijan's independence, spanning 1991-1992, Ayaz Mutallibov served as the nation's president, guiding the country through critical junctures. However, he resigned shortly after the tragic events of Khojaly in 1992.
Despite a brief reinstatement in May of the same year, Ayaz Mutallibov eventually sought refuge in Moscow, Russia, departing from Azerbaijan the following day. In 2012, he returned to his homeland and settled in Baku.
The legacy of Ayaz Mutallibov, who passed away on March 27, 2022, endures in the annals of Azerbaijani history. Today, as Azerbaijan commemorates his memory, he rests in eternal peace at Baku's "Fakhri Alley," leaving behind a profound impact on the nation's political landscape.
