Landmine incidents have occurred again in the past few days. Mine incidents were recorded in Agdam, Shusha, Nakhchivan, and Gazakh, and one person was killed. Why is Azerbaijan's mine problem not discussed at the international level? In addition, positive dynamics have been observed in the relations with Armenia recently. Why doesn't the Armenian side present mine maps to us? If peace is being talked about, why is the mine issue not resolved and continues to take lives?
Military expert Elkhan Shikhaliyev, who spoke to Ednews about the issue, said that there are institutions involved in demining operations by Azerbaijan. Once these agencies have cleared all areas, those cleared areas will be documented:
"There may be such a place in the depths that 5-10 years after the cleaning, our citizens or representatives of the state agency will encounter mine incidents in these areas. I don't think the cleanup will happen anytime soon. If demining operations continue intensively, this process can be completed in about 10 years.
Armenians knew that they did not visit the cemeteries after 1994. Especially in such sensitive places, we should expect mines. Unfortunately, these areas are sorted by at least 3-5 mines per square meter in very few countries in the world. Such areas are very few in the history of war. Huge funds, institutions, companies, and state funds should be allocated for mine clearance so that this operation can be completed quickly. "Almost 100 people are injured by landmines every year."
