The annual awareness day marked the chartering of the organization and celebrates its many accomplishments and future goals. United Nations day — which is part of United Nations week — has been in observance since 1948, three years after the United Nations received its charter.
Since it’s not a public holiday, you won’t be getting any time off work or school for this particular celebration. You can still participate in fun activities near you, however.

Why do we celebrate United Nations day?
United Nations day is celebrated to bring awareness to what the United Nations does.
They provide food and assistance to 80 million people in 80 different countries, supply vaccines to 45 per cent of the world’s children, assist and protect 65.3 million people escaping war, famine and persecution, work with about 195 nations on climate change-related issues and so much more.

United Nations day school activities
There are many ways to integrate United Nations day lessons into your regular classroom activities. NEA provides a hand-out for students in grades nine through 12 that helps explain the efforts to resolve differences between nations around the globe after World War II.
There’s another hand-out for the same age group that asks students to interpret the text of UN Article 13 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after watching a video from the perspective of a family that’s been displaced.
