The eastern-based interim government in Libya's port city of Tobruk resigned on Sunday hours after protesters set fire to its headquarters in Benghazi, Ahval news reports citing Anadolu Agency.
Prime Minister Abdallah al-Thani submitted his resignation to the Tobruk-based House of Representatives during an urgent meeting in which they discussed the protestors' demands, Anadolu said.
People in several eastern cities, including Al-Marj, Sabha and Al-Bayda, have been protesting for the last three days over the poor living conditions in Libya, which has been divided by rival governments since Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown in 2011.
Observers have warned that the Libyan conflict risks spiralling into a full-blown proxy war with the involvement of various states.
Turkey is giving direct military support to the Government of National Accord in Tripoli while the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Russia back the opposition Libyan National Army headquartered in the eastern city of Tobruk.
