Mikhail Gorbachev, the first and last president of the Soviet Union, has died, said the Central Clinical Hospital, APA reports.
It was noted that Gorbachev died at the age of 92.
"Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev died today in the evening after a long and serious illness," said the Central Clinical Hospital.
Mikhail Gorbachev was suffering from kidney failure.
He was the first and last president of the Soviet Union from March 15, 1990 to December 25, 1991. He was also the last General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU and Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
Gorbachev is considered the main organizer of the January 20, 1990 tragedy in Azerbaijan. It was on his orders that the Soviet Army entered Baku and killed civilians.
