Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Saturday he asked President Katerina Sakellaropoulou to dissolve the country's parliament and declare a general election for May 21, Ednews reports citing Reuters.
"I am pleased to hand over the ministerial council act proposing the dissolution of Parliament and the proclamation of elections. The government has practically exhausted its term, and the continuity of the state mandates this," Mitsotakis told the public. Later on, Sakellaropoulou said that she wishes for "a calm and fruitful pre-election period for the good of the country."
Mitsotakis previously confirmed the forthcoming election will take place in May instead of in June amid the criticism directed at the government following a train crash that killed 57.
