Unidentified assailants shot and killed Bertha Gisela Gaytan, a candidate from the ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) for mayor of the Mexican city of Celaya (Guanajuato state), Ednews informs via Washington Post.
The attack took place in the village of San Miguel Octopan in the suburb of Celaya, where Gaytan held the first event of the election campaign that started in the state of Guanajuato. The shooting occurred as the candidate walked through the city streets surrounded by her supporters. The politician intended to introduce her team, which was supposed to help her during the fight for the position of mayor of Celaya.
The publication indicated that on the morning of the attack, Gaytan held a press conference at which she announced the upcoming rally in the evening. She also recalled the main issues she intended to focus on, such as fighting corruption and addressing security problems. In addition, Gaytan stated that she had sent a request for armed security.
The news of Gaytan's death was also confirmed by the candidate for governor of Guanajuato from the MORENA movement, Alma Alcaraz, who announced the suspension of all events of her own election campaign.
