Former United States President Donald Trump joined the social media platform TikTok as the 2024 US presidential election campaign heats up. His first post was a video of him and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) CEO Dana White at a UFC fight in New Jersey. US President Joe Biden's campaign has been on TikTok since February.
"Being able to do outreach on multiple platforms and outlets is important and this is just one of many ways we’re going to reach out to voters. TikTok skews towards a younger audience," a Trump campaign official told Politico. Trump has been critical of TikTok in the past, attempting to ban the app in the US during his administration. However, he has recently taken to portrayingFacebook as a "great threat to democracy," claiming that it will "only get bigger and stronger if TikTok is taken out." Meanwhile, Congress passed a bill earlier this year requiring TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance Ltd. to sell the app or face a ban.
