Türkiye's Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, has revealed the nation's desire to become a member of the BRICS alliance during his recent diplomatic engagements in China, Ednews informs citing Sputnik.
Fidan, in his meetings, emphasized Türkiye's keenness to join BRICS, citing it as a potential alternative to its existing partnership with the European Union. Türkiye, which maintains a Customs Union with the EU, is actively exploring new avenues for collaboration with various partners, including BRICS.
The announcement comes ahead of Türkiye's participation in the upcoming BRICS meeting scheduled to take place in Russia next week. Fidan underscored Türkiye's commitment to fostering cooperation and multilateralism not only in Asia but also in Africa.
According to Chinese sources, Fidan expressed Türkiye's aspirations: "Of course, we want to be a member of BRICS." He further remarked, "We will see how things will progress this year."
