During President Ilham Aliyev’s recent state visit to China, Azerbaijan and China elevated their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This milestone was formalized through a joint declaration signed by President Aliyev and Chinese President Xi Jinping, encompassing cooperation across various sectors including trade, infrastructure, energy, and security.
The declaration outlines commitments to mutual respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and support for each other’s core interests. Azerbaijan reaffirmed its adherence to the “One China” policy, while China expressed support for Azerbaijan’s peace initiatives in the South Caucasus.
Economically, both nations aim to enhance collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative, focusing on the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor, also known as the “Middle Corridor.” This initiative seeks to improve connectivity between China and Europe via Azerbaijan.
Additionally, the partnership emphasizes joint efforts in combating climate change, with China supporting Azerbaijan’s hosting of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The two countries plan to cooperate on clean energy projects, including renewable energy development and green technologies.
This strategic partnership signifies a deepening of ties between Azerbaijan and China, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering regional stability, economic development, and global cooperation.
