The opening ceremony of Turkic World Week, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First Turkology Congress, was held in Baku on Monday, bringing together scholars, officials and cultural representatives from across the Turkic world. EDnews report.
The week-long event, which runs through July 3, features a wide-ranging program of international scientific and cultural activities aimed at strengthening cooperation among Turkic nations.
Following the opening ceremony, participants are taking part in a plenary session titled "The Turkic World as One Family: Activities of International Turkic Cooperation Organizations for Common Goals." The program also includes panel discussions on the historical and philological development of Turkic languages and the lasting legacy of the First Turkology Congress in advancing the cultural and scientific integration of Turkic peoples.
A total of 215 delegates from 20 countries are participating in the event.
Turkic World Week is being organized in accordance with a decree signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on October 22, 2025, commemorating the centenary of the landmark congress.
The event is jointly hosted by Azerbaijan's Ministry of Culture, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and the Ministry of Science and Education, in cooperation with the Organization of Turkic States, TURKSOY, Baku State University, the Turkic Academy, and the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation.
The First Turkology Congress was held in Baku in 1926 and is regarded as a milestone in the development of Turkic studies. President Ilham Aliyev proposed marking its 100th anniversary during the 12th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States held in Gabala in October last year.
