More than 11,000 residential buildings in southern Lebanon were completely destroyed during the recent conflict, leaving thousands of families without homes to return to, the United Nations has said.
Speaking at a briefing in New York, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric cited a new assessment showing that an additional 2,200 buildings suffered partial damage.
“For many families, this means there is simply no home to return to,” Dujarric said, warning that extensive destruction, ongoing uncertainty, and the presence of unexploded ordnance continue to hinder safe and lasting returns.
Despite the challenges, displaced residents are gradually making their way back to southern Lebanon. According to the UN, around 19,000 people left temporary shelters overnight, bringing the total number of people still living in shelters down to approximately 90,000.
Humanitarian agencies continue to monitor the situation as recovery efforts face significant obstacles across the affected areas.
