Iran is under no obligation to purchase American agricultural products using funds released under a recent agreement with the United States, the country's central bank governor has said.
Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said the arrangement allows the first tranche of $6 billion to be used for essential imports, including food and medicine, but does not require purchases from US suppliers.
“If the price and quality of American products are more competitive than those from other countries, there is no barrier to buying from the US,” Hemmati told Tasnim news agency.
He added that the remaining $6 billion could be used to acquire other non-sanctioned goods and would not be limited to basic commodities.
The comments came in response to claims by former US President Donald Trump that the released funds would be spent on American agricultural products.
