"The issue of drinking water in Azerbaijan has become increasingly urgent due to climate change. Unfortunately, neighboring Armenia intentionally releases toxic waste into the rivers flowing into Azerbaijan. The contamination of drinking water with hazardous chemical waste poses a serious threat to the food safety of the population."
Ednews reports that Sahib Mammadov, the representative of the International Eurasia Press Fund, said these words during an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the right to food at the UN Human Rights Council.
According to him, the mouth of the Okchuchay River is heavily polluted with heavy metals and dangerous substances by the mining industry of Armenia:
Transboundary Okhchuchay River is heavily polluted with heavy metals and dangerous substances by the mining industry of Armenia. Presently, the river sustains almost no aquatic life due to the pollution. During the period of occupation by Armenia, the water sources in the formerly occupied territories were deliberately contaminated, and their natural flow patterns were altered. Consequently, the population residing in the former contact line was intentionally deprived of access to clean drinking water. This dire situation prompted the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to adopt a resolution on January 26, 2016, titled "Residents of the border regions of Azerbaijan were deliberately deprived of water."
