Istanbul, Türkiye — Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has issued a strong appeal to the international community to intensify efforts to end the prolonged conflict in Sudan. Speaking at the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Fidan emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action to bring peace and stability to the war-torn African nation, where violence has persisted for more than three years.
On the Sudan Crisis
Fidan highlighted the devastating humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, including mass displacement, economic collapse, and a growing regional security risk. He urged all OIC member states and global powers to prioritize humanitarian diplomacy and to work towards an immediate ceasefire, national reconciliation, and the establishment of a viable political roadmap for peace.
“The world cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering in Sudan. It is our collective moral responsibility to help stop the bloodshed and restore stability,” he said.
Support for Syria and Rebuilding Efforts
Turning his attention to Syria, Fidan underlined recent positive developments in the war-ravaged country, expressing cautious optimism about ongoing efforts to normalize the situation. He welcomed Syria’s return to the OIC and described it as a symbolic but meaningful step toward reintegration.
“Syria is slowly returning to life through joint efforts. We must continue to support this process, including through the easing of economic sanctions that hinder reconstruction and basic humanitarian recovery,” he stated.
The foreign minister stressed the importance of inclusive engagement, dialogue, and avoiding policies that isolate or punish entire populations under the guise of political pressure.
Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot Rights
Fidan also addressed the situation in Cyprus, asserting that the island is home to “two peoples and two states” and called for international recognition and support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). He specifically urged the OIC member countries to uphold the rights and political equality of the Turkish Cypriots.
“The Turkish Cypriot people deserve full recognition and support. Their legitimate rights must not be ignored or sacrificed for political expediency,” he emphasized.
Wider Regional Message: Unity, Non-Discrimination, and Peace
Throughout his address, the Turkish Foreign Minister denounced rising calls for discrimination across the Islamic world and stressed the importance of unity and solidarity among Muslim-majority nations. He reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to working through multilateral platforms such as the OIC to address common challenges—from regional conflicts to humanitarian crises and economic instability.
Conclusion
Hakan Fidan’s speech served as a call to action on multiple fronts: urging peace in Sudan, supporting the reconstruction of Syria, advocating for the rights of Turkish Cypriots, and promoting broader Islamic unity. His remarks reflect Türkiye’s growing role as a regional diplomatic actor seeking pragmatic solutions to some of the most intractable conflicts in the Islamic world.
