The President of the International Eurasia Press Fund (IEPF) Umud Mirzayev emphasized that instead of decommissioning the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and following the rules and procedures expected by the international community, the Armenian authorities try to artificially extend its life every time, Ednews informs via Report.
The head of the NGO stated that global problems of the world are being discussed at the Nuclear Energy Summit, which started today in Brussels, Belgium.
According to him, in recent years there has been concern about environmental problems and the use of nuclear energy:
"Azerbaijani civil society has been worried about the activity of Metsamor NPP for many years. The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, built in 1976 in a seismic zone of 9.5 points, working with old technology and rated at only 8 points, is a great nuclear threat for Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Armenia and the entire region. creates".
U. Mirzayev said that the Araz River is being polluted by the Metsamor NPP:
"Poisonous substances produced as a result of the operation of the station are being discharged into the Araz River basin. The Metsamor NPP has become a source of great danger for the region as a whole."
"Unfortunately, Armenia artificially prolongs the life of Metsamor NPP. By sending an open letter to the co-chairs of the Nuclear Energy Summit - Prime Minister of Belgium Alexandre De Croix and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (AEBA) Rafael Mariano Grossi, we show how great the threat is to the operation of Metsamor NPP. "We highlighted once again what has been created. The irresponsible behavior of the Armenian authorities regarding the Metsamor NPP, false reports calculated to deceive the world community are leading the region to the next Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents," he noted.
