Members of the Political and Security Committee of the Council of the European Union (EU) will visit Armenia. It was reported that the purpose of the visit is to get an idea of the processes taking place in the region and the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process. Will the visit have a serious impact on the peace agreement? In general, what kind of mission can the EU have in the South Caucasus?
Speaking to Ednews about the visit, political scientist Fikret Sadigov said that the officials of the European Union are well aware of the situation. Events related to the processes taking place in the region are not new for them. There are several purposes for them to come here and intervene in the processes:
"The first is to strengthen their positions in the region, and the second is to neutralize Russia and exclude Russia from here. It is a very complicated problem. I do not think that they will realize this goal easily. However, they can achieve the fulfillment of certain plans. From the perspective that they will bring relations with Armenia even closer. Relations will develop in different directions. However, they forget, or rather they do not forget, that the main issue is the conclusion of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
And, they are well aware that the peace agreement will be a document that leads to stability and security. Apparently, it is a factor that does not meet their interests. If there is stability, what will be their activities in the region? The EU will lose control. We rejected their control attempts. There are no observers or delegations to strengthen their positions in Azerbaijan. Apparently, they want to use Armenia as a weak player to perform such activities here. In fact, not concluding the contract gives them a reason to strengthen this control and creates opportunities."
