Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who is 83 years old, revealed that she plans to step down from the monarchy on January 14, 2024, Ednews reports via BBC.
According to the information, this announcement was made during her customary New Year's address to the country on December 31.
"I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son Crown Prince Frederik," she added.
Queen Margrethe II became the ruler of Denmark in 1972 after her father, King Frederik IX, passed away. For the past 52 years, she has governed Denmark and overseen remarkable changes in its culture and society, propelling the nation into a contemporary and forward-thinking era.
