On Monday February 5th, the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, called on the Senegalese to resolve their "political differences through consultation, understanding and dialogue", following the tensions and violence provoked by the postponement of the presidential election, Ednews reports referring to LeMonde.
Expressing its "concern" over the postponement announced on Saturday by President Macky Sall, it called on the authorities to "organise the elections as soon as possible, in a spirit of transparency, peace and national harmony", in a statement issued on Monday morning.
Clashes broke out on Sunday in the capital, Dakar, between security forces and demonstrators mobilised by the opposition against the decision of the Head of State. The security forces made numerous arrests, according to opponents, and dispersed the demonstrators using tear gas.
