Nearly 18 million people in Sudan are facing "acute food insecurity", according to the United Nations, Ednews reports the following news referring to Le Monde.
The United Nations (UN) has asked for $4.1 billion (€3.8 billion) to meet the humanitarian needs of the population of Sudan in 2024, where a civil war has forced Sudanese to flee to neighbouring countries. "Ten months of conflict have deprived the people of Sudan of almost everything: security, shelter and livelihoods", said the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, in a statement issued on Wednesday 7 February.
The war broke out on 15 April 2023 between the army of General Abdel Fattah Al-Bourhane and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, the former number two in the military, and diplomatic efforts to negotiate peace have so far failed.
Of the 4.1 billion dollars requested, the United Nations estimates that it needs 2.7 billion dollars (2.5 billion euros) to help 14.7 million people in Sudan and 1.4 billion dollars (1.3 billion euros) to enable the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) to provide assistance to around 2.7 million people in the countries of the region.
