In defiance of US restrictions on chip technology exports to China, Chinese universities and research institutes persist in purchasing Nvidia's artificial intelligence chips, Ednews reports via Reuters.
According to the report, reveals that ten Chinese companies procured Nvidia chips from manufacturers like Super Micro Computer, Dell, and Gigabyte, as evidenced by hundreds of tender documents scrutinized.
These purchases, including some of Nvidia's most advanced chips, occurred in undisclosed auctions between November 20 and February 28, involving 11 lesser-known Chinese retailers.
Nvidia responded, asserting that the products were widely exported before the restrictions and that the tenders do not indicate export control violations by their partners. The company emphasized that such transactions represent a small fraction of global sales.
Recipients of these chips include prominent Chinese institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shandong Institute of Artificial Intelligence, and various universities, as well as government-owned technology investment firms and aerospace research centers.
