The incumbent President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, announced on Thursday that over 1,200 individuals have been apprehended by the country's security forces in connection with the recent protests fueled by the recent elections.
"We have more than 1,200 criminals detained. They were trained for some time in Texas, Colombia, Peru, Chile. They were trained to come and attack and burn. They tried to burn this mobile hospital, but you and the locals saved it. Is this a protest or a political struggle? Burn hospitals?" Maduro told the National Guard on a reel on Instagram.
The opposition in the South American country, along with various leaders from Latin America, have rejected Maduro's win in the July 28 election. According to the National Electoral Council, Maduro secured 51% of the votes. The ongoing demonstrations have resulted in the loss of at least 11 lives.
