According to reports shared in the Western media. Chairman of the European Council, Charles Michel, has announced that he will run for the European Parliament. This, in turn, means that Michelle will soon have to leave her position. Viktor Orban, one of the initial candidates, is appointed to his post.
What new perspectives can this change of position bring to our region?
Ednews conducted a survey among foreign experts.
Russian political analyst Andrew Korybko:
"In brief, I think it's premature to speculate about who'll replace Michel, but if it's indeed Orban, then he could try to impede some of the body's policies within the limits that he can from that position. I'm not too knowledgeable about the finer details of EU law so I don't know exactly how far he could go in that respect."
German analyst Brendan Fraser:
"I think Charles Michel's resignation is a kind of event that can change the perspective of peace in the South Caucasus region. Michelle's motives and perspectives can be described as positive but "toothless". At least efforts have been made to ensure rapprochement between the two countries. However, as I said, if we look at the final result, it should be emphasized that it remains "toothless". At the moment, together with this event, since the mediation role of Russia has not yet been positively received by Armenia, it is time to speed up the peace process and step into the era of negotiations without mediators. The issue of Orban taking office, which you mentioned, is not yet official, but the probability of the measure is highly valued. Due to its friendly position towards the Turkic States, both Türkiye and Azerbaijan can benefit greatly from this change of position. Basically, Orban's realistic way of thinking will bring a different and interesting perspective to the current conflicts.
