Ukraine strongly condemns the repressive actions against Azerbaijanis in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, Ukrainian Ambassador Yuriy Husyev said, EDnews reports.
"The attack by the Russian authorities on Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg is not just an incident, but a manifestation of systemic violence fueled by impunity and contempt for human life. Russia, which has been violating international law for years, unleashing a war of conquest against Ukraine, persecuting its own citizens for their political beliefs, is also directing its repressive apparatus against citizens of other states," the ambassador noted.
He also emphasized that the act of unlawful violence by Russian security forces caused a fair reaction from the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and the public in the country.
"Such a reaction is not only logical, but also necessary in conditions where the rights of national minorities in modern Russia are systematically violated, and the arbitrariness of security forces has become the norm," he said.
Husyev recalled that Ukraine has been facing Russian aggression for many years, manifested in criminal acts of various kinds, and called on the peoples of Ukraine and Azerbaijan to provide mutual support. He also called on the international community to respond to the act of violence against the Azerbaijani victims.
"The world must respond to this crime. Silence only contributes to impunity. It is necessary to increase political, diplomatic, and sanctions pressure on Moscow so that such tragedies do not happen again - neither in Yekaterinburg, nor in Kyiv or anywhere else," he added.
On the morning of June 27, the Russian FSB raided the houses of Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg. During the raid, two people were killed and several others were injured. The killed Azerbaijanis are the brothers of the well-known journalist Seyfaddin Huseynli.
On June 28, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement demanding an investigation and that "those responsible for this unacceptable act of violence" be held accountable. Later, the Russian chargé d'affaires was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a strong protest was expressed to him in connection with what had happened.
On June 29, a trial was held in Yekaterinburg regarding six detainees, three of them were given a preventive measure in the form of arrest for 22 days, and three for three days. All six didn't admit their guilt.
