In a significant development, Dr. Abdullah has officially assumed the role of UNICEF Representative in Azerbaijan. The appointment was formalized with the submission of his appointment letter to Mr. Yalchin Rafiyev, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ednews reports.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Dr. Abdullah remarked, "It is a great honor and privilege for me to begin my duties as the UNICEF Representative in Azerbaijan and to help create a better future for children in the country."
Dr. Abdullah emphasized the collaborative efforts ahead, stating, "I look forward to working with the Government of Azerbaijan and partners to strengthen our support for children, especially in the areas of health, education, child protection, and climate. As the government prepares for the COP29 conference, UNICEF stands ready to provide technical assistance to ensure that children and youth are at the center of this important climate event."
During the meeting, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yalchin Rafiyev expressed appreciation for the existing partnership with UNICEF and conveyed hope for continued cooperation. Rafiyev highlighted the timely nature of Dr. Abdullah's arrival, coinciding with Azerbaijan's preparations for the COP29 conference, underlining the potential collaboration in initiatives and events focused on educating children and young people in the field of climate.
Dr. Abdullah brings extensive international experience to his new role, with over 26 years in management and humanitarian coordination, health and nutrition, and early childhood development across various organizations. His previous roles include leading nutrition and health programs in UNICEF's Missions in Turkey, the Maldives, and the Middle East and North Africa Regional Mission in Amman, Jordan.
Hailing from Iraq, Dr. Abdullah holds degrees in General Medicine and Surgery, Community Health Sciences, and Public Health from esteemed institutions.
Under Dr. Abdullah's leadership, the UNICEF Representative Office in Azerbaijan remains committed to expanding its activities for children and youth. Collaborating with the government and partners, UNICEF aims to continue its efforts to promote children's rights and ensure access to basic health, social protection, and quality education services for all children.
