The African National Congress (ANC) lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since apartheid ended, according to nearly complete election results announced Saturday.
With over 99% of votes counted, the ANC secured just over 40%, a significant drop from its long-held majority when Nelson Mandela led the party to power in South Africa's first all-race elections.
Despite remaining the largest party, the ANC will need to form a coalition to maintain control and reelect President Cyril Ramaphosa.
