“I think that the Lavrov's visit caused the recent confrontation that led to the recent deaths in Karabakh.”
Rachel Avraham, CEO of Dona Gracia Center for Diplomacy, Israel-based editor, journalist, and political analyst told this to Ednews while commenting on the new conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“I think what caused it was basically the Russians see that there is a very good chance of there being peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. They really think that this a good chance for their maybe being peace. Moreover, because of that, they really do not want to lose their control and influence and they do not want there to be peace. That is the reason why they permitted the continued flow of weapons to Khankendi because they are afraid of that.”
“When Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov traveled to Azerbaijan he was marking the one year anniversary of the alliance that was formed between Russia and Azerbaijan. In light of that, maybe Armenians were also worried that they would lose their control and influence with Moscow. That could have been case, but I do not think that was the main reason for the violence. Main reason for the violence is the continued flow of weapons that was occurring that they were afraid of peace treaty”, political analyst added.
Political analyst stressed that there is many obstacles in the way for there being peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and it is already difficult enough to overcome these obstacles:
“But having third party like Russia come into the scene and make it more difficult is not a very tolerable situation. I really wish there was a way to get Russia out of the region and to let Azerbaijan reassert their control over these territories, as these territories are recognized as part of an Azerbaijan under four UN Security Council resolutions. I really hope that these lands become under full Azerbaijani control soon, there can be peace, prosperity for everyone.”
Rachel expressed sorrow for our soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict:
“I'd also like to add that it's very tragic that Azerbaijani soldiers lost their lives in this confrontation because of the continued weapons flow into the region. The time has really come for this continued flow of weapons ends and for this issue to be resolved.”
