US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met with Egyptian President Sisi and told reporters at a briefing before leaving for Israel, "The Rafah border crossing will be reopened. We are implementing a mechanism with the United Nations, Egypt, and Israel to receive aid and deliver it to people in need," he said.
It should be recalled that the territory of Gaza was once the territory of Egypt.
So, will Egypt be able to accept Palestinians fleeing from Gaza in the light of the current economic crisis? How can we evaluate Egypt's role in the Israel-Hamas conflict?
Palestinian expert Khalil Al-Asali stated in his statement to Ednews that although the admission of Palestinians to Egypt is a matter of agenda, it may create a crisis in many places in the area:
“Egypt can help the Palestinians by opening the Rafah Gate or border for Humanitarian Aid. However, they will not accept the sending of the people of Gaza and the Palestinians to Sinai. No, they certainly won't, because it would create a crisis even within Israel and around the world, especially in the Arab world. And remember that the entire Arab world, especially Jordan, absolutely refuses to accept Palestinian refugees. Sending refugees from Gaza to other countries, including Jordan, is like declaring war. Therefore, I do not think that Egypt will help in this matter by accepting that the Palestinians will fill their territories."
The expert thinks that Israel, not Egypt, should bear the responsibility for Gaza:
"Let me note that there is no such thing as only Hamas-Israel conflict. It is also the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Because Israel also shoots Palestinian civilians. I reminded you that the majority of Palestinians in Gaza are not members of Hamas. It is true that Gaza used to be an Egyptian territory and even today's people can be seen speaking Egyptian slang if you go to Gaza. They share the same habits, the same feeling, the same traditions as the people of Egypt. But this does not mean that Egypt will now take care of Gaza, they can still help them in some way. Remember that Egypt is the only gateway from Gaza to the Western world. So, yes, they have to consider Egypt's dominance in this conflict and how Egypt can help and the conditions under which Egypt wants to help in this. But at the end of the day, Israel is the ruling body in the area. "Israel must take responsibility for Gaza, because the occupied territories do not belong to Egypt."
