Following the 2011 earthquake in Japan, the Fukushima Dai-ii Nuclear Power Plant, damaged by a tsunami, is set to initiate the fifth phase of discharging radioactive wastewater into the ocean starting tomorrow, as reported by Ednews via Gazeteduvar.
According to a statement from Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), the plant operator, the first phase of wastewater discharge for the fiscal year 2024, which commenced on April 1, will occur from April 19 to May 7, involving the release of 7,800 tons of wastewater.
TEPCO's plans for the 2024 fiscal year, ending on March 31, 2025, include a total discharge of 54.6 thousand tons of wastewater into the ocean across seven stages. During the previous fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, the company discharged a total of 31,200 tons of wastewater into the Pacific Ocean across four stages, spanning from August 24 to September 11, October 5 to 23, November 2 to 20, and February 28 to March 17.
Government inspections at the power plant have reported that the levels of radioactivity in seawater and fish products remain significantly below the established standards.
