Azerbaijani Ambassador to Kabul Ilham Mammadov has discussed with the head of the National Environmental Protection Agency of Afghanistan Mawlavi Mati-ul-Haq Khalis Kabul's participation in climate conferences and possible expansion of bilateral cooperation, Report informs referring to the agency's Facebook page.
During the meeting, the Afghan side expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan for successfully hosting the COP29 climate summit and supporting Afghanistan's participation in this important global forum. The parties also exchanged views on the cultural and regional ties between the two countries, as well as the impact of climate change on their shared geographic area.
The head of the agency stressed the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation in environmental protection and called on Azerbaijan to support Afghanistan's active participation in the COP30 summit to be held in Brazil. He also expressed the intention of the Afghan side to establish an exchange of scientific and technical experience, increase human resources, and sign agreements on joint environmental work.
Ambassador Ilham Mammadov, in turn, noted the importance of including Afghanistan in global climate processes and emphasized its vulnerability to climate change. The diplomat drew attention to the devastating consequences of the recent floods in Afghanistan and added that Azerbaijan is ready to share its experience in the field of renewable energy and is gradually abandoning the use of fossil fuels.
At the end of the meeting, the parties confirmed their commitment to combating climate change, implementing sustainable development goals, and participating in regional and international environmental initiatives.
