A senior Iranian lawmaker says a new bill aimed at managing the Strait of Hormuz has been formally introduced in parliament, signaling what he described as the first step in a broader strategy concerning the vital waterway.
Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian Parliament's National Security Committee, said the proposed legislation, titled "Strategic Action for the Security and Sustainable Progress of the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf," was submitted following the reported downing of US drones.
In a post on X, Azizi said Iran remains committed to defending what it considers its "red lines," particularly regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz.
"This is the first step; subsequent measures are forthcoming," he wrote.
Iranian authorities have not released further details about the proposed legislation or its potential impact on maritime traffic through the strategic shipping route.
