As the world celebrated International Women's Day, ADA University became the focal point for discussions on the intersection of gender and climate action. Titled "Gender and Climate Action: Solutions for Women by Women," the event featured prominent speakers, including Deputy Chairman of State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs Sadagat Gahramanova, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Vladanka Andreeva, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 Azerbaijan Nigar Arpadarai, journalist and political analyst Anastasia Lavrina, and Maryam Majidova, Head of Gender Hub Azerbaijan, Ednews reports.
Addressing the audience, Sadagat Gahramanova highlighted the crucial role of women in the state, emphasizing the necessity of incorporating gender components for effective policy implementation. Gahramanova stated, "Women are tasked not only with traditional roles but also with actively contributing to shaping a novel framework for the state's activities, including considerations for environmental protection."
Vladanka Andreeva, the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, expressed the UN's commitment to supporting women in increasing their role in climate action. She stressed the importance of active public participation in addressing climate change and welcomed the expertise of individuals in creating a comprehensive climate action plan.
Nigar Arpadarai underscored advancements in education and educational programs, emphasizing the correlation between women's education levels and their ability to contribute to a 'green society.' She stated, "We aspire to see more women in prominent, innovative societal roles."
Anastasia Lavrina advocated for increased collaboration at all societal levels, including with international organizations. She emphasized the media's role in advancing education on gender dynamics and climate issues, stating that women should not be sidelined in addressing critical issues affecting the planet's future.
Maryam Majidova drew attention to challenges related to water resources and desertification in certain regions of Azerbaijan, attributing these issues to climate change. She emphasized the need to instill a conscientious attitude toward the environment, with women playing a crucial role as mothers, teachers, and mentors.
During the Q&A session, representatives from the International Eurasia Press Fund - Laman Alakbarova and Akbar Novruz shared information about the IEPF Deminer Women team, highlighting their collaboration with the Mine Action Agency of The Republic of Azerbaijan.
The symposium concluded with participants acknowledging the imperative to increase efforts in advocating for environmental protection, underscoring the vital role of women in shaping a sustainable future.
