Stoltenberg: Goal to admit Sweden to NATO by summer summit

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday the alliance still aims to admit Sweden to NATO before its next summit scheduled for July 11-12, EDnews informs via CNN.

"Sweden as a member of NATO is good for the whole alliance," Stoltenberg stated. "Six weeks is absolutely long enough to make that happen if the will is there," he added but acknowledged that Turkey's concerns about Sweden joining the alliance are legitimate. Stoltenberg also insisted the alliance would protect Sweden if needed even if it is not formally a member. "Any idea that Sweden is left alone is absolutely wrong…therefore, we would react if there was any type of attack," he pointed out.

Most NATO members ratified Sweden's accession to the alliance, but Hungary and Turkey are yet to do so.
