NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will travel to Turkey on June 3 and 4 for the inauguration of newly re-elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He will also hold bilateral meetings with Erdogan and other Turkish officials, according to the NATO press office, Ednews reports citing Breakingnews.com.
Stoltenberg's trip will present a crucial opportunity to win Turkey's approval of Sweden's NATO bid. Turkey and Hungary are the only member states that did not ratify Sweden's accession at the same time as Finland's. Earlier this week, Stoltenberg said that he aims to admit Sweden into NATO before the Vilnius summit in July, adding that "six weeks is absolutely long enough to make that happen if the will is there."
