The Permanent Representatives Committee of the European Union (COREPER) will discuss the possibilities of tightening sanctions against Belarus on July 26, Ednews informs.
According to diplomatic sources, the EU intends to synchronize the sanctions regime against Belarus with the restrictions against Russia, still without making exceptions for Belarusian fertilizers bought by the West.
If a compromise is reached, a written procedure will be initiated and sanctions may be imposed within days. At the same time, there is no guarantee that an agreement can be reached.
According to diplomatic sources in Brussels, the two main elements that European diplomats are trying to agree on are an embargo on the supply of weapons, ammunition, equipment and dual-use components to Belarus that can be used for military production, as well as the suspension of the supply of Belarusian fertilizers to the EU.
