Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda didn’t rule out a complete closure of the border with Belarus due to the presence of the Wagner private military company (PMC) there, Ednews informs referring to TASS.
He was speaking at a press conference with Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki after a joint visit to the Anti-Tank Artillery Regiment based in Suwalki.
“We should not only talk about measures at the national level, but also discuss algorithms for what to do if the situation worsens even more, including closing the border with Belarus. But this should take place in coordination between Poland, Lithuania and Latvia,” he said.
Earlier, the Polish side also announced the possibility of complete isolation of Belarus. According to Morawiecki, there may currently be 4,000 members of the Wagner PMC or ‘a little more’ in the country.
According to Warsaw and Vilnius, Wagner PMCs can be used for provocations against Poland and the Baltic countries, as well as the entire eastern flank of NATO, or to exacerbate the migration crisis. Morawiecki suggested that the Wagner members may disguise themselves and impersonate illegal migrants in order to penetrate the territory of Poland and other NATO countries and organize sabotage there.
“Therefore, we are moving our troops to the east of the country to strengthen the eastern flank of NATO and the EU,” he said.
