The epicenter was about 45 km (28 miles) northeast of Dipayal, Nepal. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 7 km (4 miles), and shaking was probably felt throughout western Nepal, southwestern Tibet, and northeastern Uttar Pradesh State, India.
There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage.
