European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealed on Wednesday that the European Union's governing body proposed opening formal accession negotiations between Kiev and the bloc, Ednews reports via POLITICO.
"Ukrainians are deeply reforming their country and preparing for accession, even as they are fighting an existential war," von der Leyen said in a tweet. In a follow-up statement, the European Commission disclosed that accession talks will also start with Moldova, while Georgia will be granted "candidate status" to join the European Union. "Ukraine belongs to our European family. This is already a fact," European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell commented on the decision.
On June 24 last year, the European Council approved candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova.
